During the early 13th Century, the Byzantine Empire had been overthrown by crusaders and turned into the Latin Empire. Their most dangerous enemy, the Bulgarians, had just defeated the Crusaders and Genoans at the battle of Adrianople, forcing them back into Greece. Up North, the Golden Horde waited for either of the forces to grow weak enough so that they could attack. Meanwhile, on a small plot of land, all these forces would clash, near the Danube Delta. Whoever gained control of the Delta, controlled the Danube. And whoever controlled the Danube, controlled the Balkans.
