Located on the seaside, Rio de Janeiro is a city in Brazil known for its beautiful weather, large stretches of tropical beaches, steep-sided mountains and brightly painted neighborhoods, built right on top of those very same mountains. Those neighborhoods are commonly referred to as Favelas. The first Favelas cropped up onto the hills of Rio in the late 19th Century, giving the city one of its main distinctive looks. Rio is the second-most-populous city in Brazil, with its metro population being over 14,000,000. Rio's main nickname is the Marvelous City.
