About & history
This magnificent basilica stands a short distance outside the walls of modern Rome from where the hills of Rome may be seen. It was first constructed as a temple to the Roman deitie Jupiter and later was converted to a Christian edifice under Constantine the Great in the year 330. This great building has served many purposes across the millennia including a fortress that withstood civil wars and the many wars against the invading Franks and Goths and as protection for the Roman emperor.
