By the year 1861, Mexico had been embroiled in a four year civil war. Unable to play its debts to France, His Majesty Napoleon III ordered French forces to invade the country. After being defeated at the Battle of Puebla in 1862, French forces returned in 1863, and this time with the aid of Mexican imperialists.
