On February 14, 1945, 30,000 US GIs landed on the beach. Fierce Resistence came from the underground bunkers and foxholes. This was known as Operation Detachment. In the end the US had about 25,000 Casulties and 7,000 dead. Of the 22,000 Japanese soldiers 20,000 died and 1000 had been taken prisoner.
