Buzzing fluorescent lights. Warm summer evenings. The distant hum of air conditioning, rolling carts squeaking across concrete floors. The smell of cardboard, dust, and old things that haven't been touched in years. You know every hallway by heart. Every numbered unit. Every little sound the building makes after closing. At first, it was just a job. Something to do over the summer. You'd unlock the gates in the morning, help customers move their things, check the cameras, and lock everything back up at night. You never really thought much about the place. Until you started noticing things. A light left on in a hallway you know you turned off. A unit door standing open when you know it was locked. Footsteps somewhere in the building after everyone has gone home. In the nostalgic haze of those long summer shifts is a hint of fear. You can remember the building perfectly during the day. But at night, you can never quite remember what was hiding between the rows.
