About

The Irish War of Independence — often called the "Tan War" or "Black and Tan War" — was a guerrilla conflict fought in Ireland from 1919 to 1921, and a defining moment of the Irish Revolutionary period. The war pitted Irish Volunteers against the British forces — the British Army, Royal Irish Constabulary (RIC), Auxiliaries, and Ulster Special Constabulary. The Volunteers were a decentralized revolutionary force made up largely of civilians, fighting through ambushes, intelligence networks, and flying columns to end British rule and establish an independent Irish Republic. The “Black and Tans” earned their name from their improvised khaki and dark green uniforms. Deployed nationwide, they became infamous for reprisals against civilians, including arson, looting, and killings — actions that only strengthened Irish resistance. “They had gone down into the mire to destroy us and our nation, and down after them we had to go.” – Tom Barry, 3rd West Cork Brigade
