Carrie: Bates High School, May 1979

Thomas Bates High School School Year 1978 - 1979 -------------------------------- The original Bates High School was built between 1907 and 1910; before opening publicly as a junior and senior school in 1911. The school would later be partially destroyed in an earthquake in 1939 before reopening as a senior school only in 1946. -------------------------------- One night in 1979, the school would be permanently destroyed when a fire broke out in the school gymnasium. The town in which it was located, Chamberlain, would later be devastated that night as the fire from the school spread rapidly to neighboring areas of the town. -------------------------------- A new Bates High School would open in 1986 and would later be the center of another controversy during the fall of 1999.
