Kraton Ngayogyakarta Hadiningrat

In 1755, Sri Sultan Hamengku Buwono I, also known as Pangeran Mangkubumi, began to build the city of Yogyakarta. The embodiment of the concept into the spatial layout of Yogyakarta City resulted from the life journey of Prince Mangkubumi. Born as the son of the King of Mataram, Sunan Amangkurat IV, Prince Mangkubumi grew up in the Kartasura Palace. Due to the move of the palace location, Prince Mangkubumi subsequently learnt the ins and outs of Surakarta Palace. Yogyakarta Palace was built based on Javanese conception by referring to the existing landscape, such as mountains, sea, rivers, and land. The main principle used as the basis for the construction of the palace by Sri Sultan Hamengku Buwono I was the conception of Hamemayu Hayuning Bawono. This means making bawono (nature) hayu (beautiful) and rahayu (safe and sustainable). These concepts were embodied by Sri Sultan Hamengku Buwono I with the South Sea and Mount Merapi as the axis.
