Laurel Street, San Miguel, Manila, Philippines Built in 1750 along the Pasig River as a Spanish colonial summer house, Malacañang later became the official residence of Spanish governors-general and, after 1898, American civil governors. During the Commonwealth era, Manuel L. Quezon was the first Filipino president to reside there, transforming it into a symbol of national leadership. Since Philippine independence in 1946, the palace has served as the working residence and executive headquarters of the President of the Philippines, witnessing colonial rule, dictatorship, revolution, and the continuing evolution of Philippine Democracy.
