Parris Island, South Carolina, is a renowned United States Marine Corps Recruit Depot located on an island in Beaufort County. It serves as the primary training ground for all male Marine recruits east of the Mississippi River and all female recruits nationwide. The island has a rich history, dating back to 1562 when French explorers established Charlesfort, one of the first European settlements in what is now the United States. It was later the site of the Spanish settlement Santa Elena, which served as the capital of Spanish Florida from 1566 to 1587.
