About & history
Cause of the Stage Bridge Collapse: The collapse of the Stage Bridge was primarily due to a critical failure in its suspension cables, which had suffered from decades of undetected corrosion. Despite routine inspections, a design flaw in the anchorage system allowed moisture to accumulate within the protective sheaths of the main cables. Over time, this trapped moisture caused accelerated internal rusting, significantly weakening the cables from the inside out. On the day of the collapse, an unusually large convoy of freight trucks crossed the bridge, pushing the already compromised cables beyond their remaining capacity. Under the excessive weight, a central suspension cable snapped, creating an imbalance in load distribution. This led to a rapid sequence of structural failures, including the collapse of the mid-span deck and the toppling of two support towers. Further investigation revealed that inspection teams had relied heavily on visual assessments and outdated testing methods
