The White House is the official residence and workplace of the President of the United States. The site was selected by George Washington in 1791 and in 1800, John Adams and his wife became the first residents. The building was rebuilt and refurbished after being set ablaze by British forces in the War of 1812, where it still stands today as a symbol of American democracy and perseverance.
