USS George Washington (CVN-73) is a nuclear-powered aircraft carrier of the United States Navy, notable for being the sixth ship in the Nimitz class and the fourth to bear the name of the first President of the United States. Overview Commissioning: The USS George Washington was commissioned on July 4, 1992, at Naval Station Norfolk, Virginia. It was built by Newport News Shipbuilding, with its keel laid on August 25, 1986, and launched on July 21, 1990, sponsored by First Lady Barbara Bush. 2 Specifications: The carrier is 1,092 feet (333 meters) long, 257 feet (78 meters) wide, and can accommodate approximately 90 aircraft.
