Sân Bay Phú Lộc Quốc Tế was originally built as a cargo and emergency diversion airfield, which explains its very long and reinforced runway. Passenger traffic was low, so only a small terminal was constructed. Over time, the airport was upgraded to handle large widebody aircraft, including the Boeing 747, without expanding the terminal. This made Phú Lộc unique: a modest-looking airport with the ability to host very large jets. Today, Phú Lộc operates as a secondary international airport, supporting domestic flights, regional services, charters, training flights, and special events. Its oversized runway and apron make it a strategic choice for airlines needing flexibility outside major hubs.
