Located in Lincolnshire, RAF Cranwell is where the majority of RAF officers begin their careers at the RAF College Cranwell, founded in 1919. The station has a long aviation history and is often described as the “cradle of the Royal Air Force.” Today, RAF Cranwell focuses on leadership, academic education, and initial flying training rather than frontline operations. It hosts officer cadet training, specialist aircrew courses, and the Defence College of Air and Space Operations. While flying does take place, the emphasis is on training and development, not combat missions. The base combines historic architecture, including the famous College Hall, with modern training facilities, making it both a symbolic and practical centre of RAF education and leadership.
