During the Early Modern Period, Italy was plagued by Barbary Pirate raids that devastated coastal cities and resulted in the mass captivity of its people. In response to this persistent threat, the Kingdom of Sardinia commissioned a stone watchtower near its coast, constructed from local materials, to combat these attacks.
