The inhabitants of this vast metropolis live in constant fear of these bloodthirsty savages and their thirst for human flesh. However, the greatest threat these ghouls pose is their dangerous ability to pass themselves off as human and blend into society. The story follows Ken Kaneki, a shy university student who is immediately attracted to Rize Kamishiro, an avid reader like himself. However, Rize isn't exactly who she seems. During a date, she nearly kills Kaneki by revealing her ghoul nature. He survives thanks to Rize's organs, transplanted in place of the ones she destroyed when she attacked him. The young man is now a hybrid, half-human, half-ghoul, and will live through a living hell.
