BNSF Trackside Mainline

BNSF Railway’s mainline is a busy network where freight trains move across the country day and night. From the trackside, you can see powerful locomotives hauling long trains of containers, grain, coal, automobiles, and other freight. Double-stack intermodal trains are especially common, speeding between major terminals and cities. BNSF’s mainlines feature multiple tracks, signals, crossings, bridges, and dispatching systems that keep traffic moving safely and efficiently. Locomotives such as GE ES44C4s, AC44C6Ms, and other modern power can often be seen leading or pushing trains. Trackside railfans may also notice maintenance equipment, signal structures, mileposts, and passing sidings. The constant movement, powerful locomotives, and variety of freight make BNSF mainlines an exciting place to watch modern American railroading in action.
